Material List for Painting Workshops

Palette:
The workshops will be taught using oil paint. Below is a recommended Palette:

Brand: Windsor Newton Oil Paints
Titanium White
Alizarin Crimson
Windsor Red or Cadmium Red Light
Cadmium Orange
Cadmium Yellow
Yellow Ochre
Viridian
Cerulean Blue
French Ultramarine Blue

Brand: Rembrandt (in addition to the Windsor Newton colors listed above):
Cadmium Yellow Light

Brushes:
I recommend that you use large brushes. This is important and will help a lot. The best sizes are #s 10, 12   and 14. Have a couple of these sizes in the following styles: Rounds,  filberts  and flats if you like them (ask a sales person for assistance if you are a beginner). Also have the usual smaller brushes: Rounds and filberts  #’s 2-8 and a rigger brush (sable or synthetic) for masts, rigging and your signature.

Turpentine:
You will need a small bottle of Windsor Newton distilled turpentine (to be used in small quantities with oil paint) as well as some paint thinner for cleaning brushes (recommend you place small amount of paint thinner in a jar for this purpose).

Medium:
A Medium is something that is mixed into paint for a particular effect (usually a combination of varnish and oil). It’s a personal preference and not a necessity for the workshop. I sometimes use a little or none at all. When I do use one it consists of 5 parts turps, 1 part Damar Varnish and 1 part stand oil.

Canvas:
Most art stores carry prepared canvas. These are fine. However, it is preferable to use the “oil primed” canvases or oil boards. Smaller sized canvases or boards are recommended for the workshop (sizes 9” x 12” to 12” x 16”)

Easel:
There are various outdoor (a.k.a Plein Air) easels, but I highly recommend the traditional French Easel. These can be a bit on the expensive side though so an aluminum tripod style easel is fine to use too.
